Aleksei
Fedorov, known as “Alex,” was born in Russia
in July 1990 and immigrated to the United States with
his parents, Elena Bakina and Vladimir Fedorov, in 1994.
He began studying the piano with his mother at age six
and by the age of nine had given his first solo recital.
He has studied at the Central School for Gifted Children
of Moscow Conservatory, the Gnessin School in Russia
and the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University
in Houston, where he was the first student to receive
a Preparatory School scholarship.
At the age of ten Alex was cited as one of the best
young pianists of the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area
at the Houston Young Artists Competition. He has performed
twice at Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall
and in 2002 he was offered a scholarship to the prestigious
Aspen Summer Music Festival. His recitals at Rice University’s
Duncan Recital Hall have resulted in the CD Live from
Duncan Recital Hall which has received favorable comments
from the musical community. On October 16, 2002 he performed
at the Mary Gibbs Jones Concert Hall in Waco for the
Public Radio International (PRI) show From the Top.
In October 2002 he performed Beethoven Concerto No.1
in C Major with the Woodlands Symphony conducted by
Dagang Chan.
At the age of ten Aleksei was awarded First Prize in
his age category at the 21st International Bartok Piano
Competition in Virginia (2001) and also was recognized
with the Levin Houston Outstanding Musician Award. At
eleven he took Third Prize in the Junior Division at
the Puigcerda International Piano Competition in Spain.
He was a Gold medallist at the Second Chopin Youth Competition
of Houston (2001) in the Junior Division and a recipient
of the “Best Performance of Polonaise” award.
In June of 2001 he appeared on Debra Duncan’s
live TV show “Search for New Talent” on
ABC where he was a winner in the children’s category.
In addition to Elena Bakina (his mother), Aleksei’s
previous teachers include Zoya Shuhatovich and Dariusz
Pawlas. He currently studies with Shi-Mei Shao. He has
participated and played at a master class conducted
by Gyorgy Sandor as well as had a private lessons with
Jon Kimura Parker, Konstantin Sirounian, Vladimir Viardo,
and Oxana Yablonskaya.
Aleksei has played many recitals throughout The Woodlands
in schools, nursing homes retirement communities, and
charity events such as “Parents for Cancer.”
In 2001 he played duo recital with Russian pianist from
Moscow Conservatory Irina Krasotina at the Montgomery
College.
Aleksei is in the seventh grade at the Branch Crossing
Junior High School in The Woodlands. When he is not
at the piano he enjoys playing tennis, reading about
history of Egypt, Rome and Greece. Aleksei is fluent
in both English and Russian.
