Steven
Osborne is one of Britain's most highly regarded
young pianists. He was born in Scotland in 1971
and studied with Richard Beauchamp at St. Mary's
Music School in Edinburgh and with Renna Kellaway
at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
In 1988 he was a finalist in the piano section
of the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition,
and went on to win first prize in the prestigious
Clara Haskil Competition in 1991 and the Naumburg
International Competition in New York in May 1997.
In the
UK he has worked with orchestras such as the Royal
Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic,
BBC Scottish Symphony, Hallé, Academy of Saint
Martin-in-the-Fields, Royal Scottish National,
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Bournemouth Sinfonietta,
and the Scottish Chamber Orchestras. He has made
many live and studio recordings for the BBC and
has given recitals at the Wigmore Hall and at
the Edinburgh, Aldeburgh, Bath, Cheltenham, Glories
of the Keyboard (Manchester), and St Magnus Festivals.
In 1998 he made his debut at the Proms performing
Shostakovich Piano Concerto No 2 and returned
in 2000 for a televised performance of Gershwin's
Rhapsody in Blue with the BBC Symphony Orchestra
conducted by Sir Andrew Davis.
Abroad
Steven has performed throughout Europe as well
as in the USA and the Far East. In January 1995
he made his debut tour of Japan which included
a recital at Tokyo's Suntory Hall as part of the
JAL New Artists' series. In May 1996 he appeared
with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
under Libor Pešek at the Prague Spring Festival
and in 1998 he made his debut in Vienna performing
Mozart Piano Concerto in F K.459 with the Vienna
Chamber Orchestra.
Last season
he made his Norwegian debut with the Bergen Philharmonic
Orchestra conducted by Andrew Litton and performed
several times in Germany including four performances
of Beethoven Piano Concerto No 5 with the Sudwestdeutsche
Philharmonie in Konstanz conducted by Petr Altrichter.
He has developed a strong reputation on both sides
of the Atlantic, and has performed with many US
orchestras including the New York Chamber Symphony,
Utah and Phoenix Symphony Orchestras and has given
recitals at Alice Tully Hall and the Frick Collection
in New York and at the Kennedy Center in Washington
DC.
