Valeriy Sokolov

Born on September 22nd in Kharkov, Ukraine, Valeriy Sokolov started the violin at the age five. Aged nine, he was admitted into the Class of Prof. Sergueï Evdokimov at the Kharkov “ Secondary Special Music School”.

In 1997, Valeriy appeared as a soloist with an orchestra for the first time.In 1998 he took part in several international competitions and is awarded third prizes in two of them, in Czechoslovakia and in the Ukraine. Then, in 1999, aged thirteen, Valeriy enters the “International Pablo Sarasate Competition” in Pamplona, Spain where he was awarded the ‘Study Grant’ prize, funded by Vladimir Spivakov, in the form of a scholarship in order to pursue his studies at the Yehudi Menuhin School in England.

Later on in 1999, he also appeared as a soloist in a concert given by the « Moscow Virtuosi » conducted by Vladimir Spivakov.

Since 2001 he has been studying at the Yehudi Menuhin School in Natalia Boyarskaya’s Class, and has featured in the numerous concerts given by the school, either as soloist or as chamber musician, performing for the first time Beethoven’s Concerto in England, in July 2003 after being awarded a ‘Sevenoaks young musician of the Year’ prize.

Valeriy has taken part in Master Classes given by Mstislav Rostropovitch, Zvi Zeitlin Dora Schwarzberg, Zakhar Bron, Ruggiero Ricci and Igor Ozim (1999).

In November 2003 he gained a 3rd Prize at the Liana Issakadze International Violin Competition in St .Petersburg .

In 2004 Valeriy has given a recital in the Louvre as a part of a festival ’Classique en Image du Violon’ as well as at the Issakadze-Borjomi Festival in Georgia.

In September Valery has given a recital in Toulouse which has been made into a Film-Recital directed by Bruno Monsaingeon in the co-production of ARTE and France 3.

Valery Sokolov has recently been awarded the Gold Medal at the 2005 Enesco Violin Competition .

His concerts at the Miami International Piano Festival on March 28, in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Artst and on May 13 at the Lincoln Theater in Miami Beach will mark his debut in the United States.
