Award-winning pianist Anthony Ratinov has established himself as one of the leading musicians of his generation, with a successful career in both solo and chamber music. Anthony has won prizes at many prestigious international competitions – most recently winning the 1st Prize at the 2023 Ricard Viñes International Piano Competition, and the 2nd Prize and Audience Favorite Prize at the 2023 València Iturbi International Piano Competition. His performance in the Grand Finals of the Iturbi Competition received glowing reviews, praising his display of “class, style, technical mastery and solo prowess in his lyrical and also incisive version of Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto” (Beckmesser). His performances of Spanish works have also been recognized by special prizes at competitions across Spain – including awards at both the Iturbi Competition and the Maria Canals Competition for best performance of Spanish music.
Anthony began playing piano at the age of four under the teaching of his grandmother, Edit Ratinova, who taught at the renowned Gnessin Music School in Moscow, Russia for 45 years and was a student of the school’s founder, Elena Fabianovna Gnesina. Anthony was recently accepted into the highly selective and prestigious Artist Diploma program at The Juilliard School, and will be joining the studio of Robert McDonald in the fall of 2023. He completed his graduate studies at the Yale School of Music studying with Boris Berman and Boris Slutsky, and previously studied at Yale University, where he majored in chemical engineering and graduated with honors, in addition to studying piano with Wei-Yi Yang.
Amongst Anthony’s many additional honors, he won 2nd Prize at the 2022 Olga Kern International Piano Competition, the Jury Special Prize at the 2022 Hilton Head International Piano Competition, and was selected as a Finalist of the 64th Busoni International Piano Competition, advancing to the live rounds in Bolzano, Italy in 2023. He also received the 1st prize at the 2021 Canada International Artists Piano Competition, and the Pianists' Award (1st prize), sponsored by Bösendorfer, at the International Summer Academy in Austria in 2021 and 2019.
This past season, Anthony has appeared as a soloist with orchestras across Spain and the United States, performing such notable concertos such as Brahms No. 2, Prokofiev No. 3, and Beethoven No. 3. Anthony has performed extensively both in the United States and in Europe, including recent solo concert tours across the Netherlands and South Florida, and has given recitals and performances at such prominent venues as The Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the ORF RadioKulturhaus performance hall in Vienna, and the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington D.C. He has also given live performances and interviews on the national radios both in Amsterdam and in Vienna.
A celebrated and sought-after chamber musician, Anthony has won several prestigious chamber music competitions with his piano trio, Trio Ondata – recently winning the 1st Prize and Audience Favorite Prize at the 2023 Chamber Music in Yellow Springs Competition, and the Silver Medal at the 2022 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. Anthony regularly collaborates with vocalists and instrumentalists both in the United States and in Europe, and has had the honor of closely working with such notable chamber coaches and musicians as Ani Kavafian, Paul Watkins, Robert McDonald, Boris Slutsky, Syoko Aki, Mark Steinberg, Misha Amory, Serena Canin, Thomas Sauer, John Novacek, Rieko Aizawa, Jesse Mills, and Ole Akahoshi.
Anthony is the recipient of several music scholarships, including the Charles S. Miller Prize, awarded to a gifted pianist at the Yale School of Music who has done outstanding work during the first year of study, the Yale School of Music Alumni Association Prize, awarded to students who have not only excelled in their respective fields but have also made important contributions to the general life of the school, the Evelyn Bonar Storrs Piano Scholarship, and the R. J. R. Cohen Fellowship for Musical Performance Studies.
Anthony actively performs and participates in summer festivals, including the Taos School of Music Chamber Music Festival, the Fellowship program at the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the Mimir Chamber Music Festival, the Semaine Internationale de Piano in Switzerland, the Virtuoso & Belcanto Festival in Italy, the International Holland Music Sessions, and the International Summer Academy in Vienna - where he was featured on the highlight performances CD from the festival’s recent years.
Anthony also enjoys exploring new music and working with composers, having commissioned several piano solo and chamber music works, and has performed as part of new music programs such as the Gamper Contemporary Music Festival at the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the New Music New Haven series at the Yale School of Music, and the “Just Composed” program at the International Summer Academy in Vienna. He has also performed in master classes of such distinguished teachers and performers as Jan Jiracek von Arnim, Edith Fischer, Wei-Yi Yang, Boris Slutsky, Mikhail Voskresensky, Roberto Prosseda, Julian Martin, Douglas Humpherys, Marian Hahn, Ian Jones, Gottlieb Wallisch, Yejin Gil, and Melvin Chen.
